What is a Gospel? (NT Survey Lesson 7)
Dr. Jono Linebaugh
What is a Gospel? The New Testament tells us Jesus saves sinners. The words written into the context of the 1st century come alive. The message of the New Testament is a word of hope to sufferers then and to sinners and sufferers now. Jesus did not fit the expectations of the people at the time. Explore the canonical Jesus as God acts through his Word. Touch upon Martin Luther's "A Brief Instruction on What to Look For and Expect in the Gospels". The Gospels are the story of Jesus. There is one Christ so there is one Gospel. To hear the facts of Jesus' history and believe it is for you is the Gospel. Jesus was spoken of in the Old Testament. Augustine reflected, "The New Testament is in the Old Testament concealed. The Old Testament in the New Testament is revealed." There is a distinction between Christ as gift and example. Once you receive Christ as gift then you can look to Him as example. The difference is between faith and works of love that flow from faith. There is a distinction between Gospel and a form of Law. Christ's example is a life lived for others. Christ's life is given to you as a gift. For Luther, Christ's story being our story was an "alien life".
